Four moves, in order, until it plays

Four moves you have not tried.

You have more time than it feels like. If a track was playing when the drive died it is still playing, and a big library can take thirty seconds to appear. Do not yank anything.

You have already reseated it and tried the other deck.

  1. FOLDER The database is gone. The music is not.

    If the drive shows up at all, even with the playlists gone: SOURCE (or USB on older players), select the drive, then look for FOLDER in the browse list. Some players show you the folder tree by themselves when the library will not read. Either way you are browsing files instead of playlists, which is the part that usually died. You lose cues, playlists and sync. You keep the gig. This is the single most useful thing on this page and the one most DJs have never tried.

  2. LINK Play off the other player’s drive.

    If there is a LAN cable in the back of each player, any of them can browse and load from a drive that is physically in another one. No LAN socket, no LINK. Your own drive being dead does not matter. In a club where the players are linked this is often the fastest fix available, and it is the one people forget when the room is looking at them.

  3. RESTART Power-cycle the dead player.

    USB STOP first, and wait for the USB light to stop blinking before the drive comes out or the power goes off. AlphaTheta’s warning is that pulling or powering down while it blinks may delete the unit’s management data or leave the drive unreadable. Light out, drive out, then power off, twenty seconds, back on. It feels too drastic mid-set so people skip it, but on a player nothing depends on it costs you nothing. Never do this to a deck that is live, never to the deck the other DJ is on, and never to a player whose drive another deck is reading over LINK: that deck goes quiet the moment you unplug.

  4. BORROW Ask the DJ either side of you for a drive.

    Most of the time it just mounts and you are playing. If it does not, it is not your fault and not theirs: a drive in NTFS will not mount on a player at all, and library formats differ between players, so it can mount and still show no playlists. Playlists missing, browse it by folder, move one. Nothing mounts, ask the next person rather than concluding the borrow does not work. You will be playing someone else’s music, but you will be playing. Music first, pride later.

Do not let anything format or initialise your drive at the gig, and never say yes to a computer that offers to. Your music is still on it, and formatting is the one action you cannot undo.
If there is no drive anywhere

A phone into a spare channel keeps the room from going silent. Be clear with yourself about what it is: not your set continuing, the room not stopping. It also only works if you already carry a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter and a 3.5mm to twin RCA cable. No weight, no money, and worth nothing at all if it is at home.

None of this is needed by the DJ who walked in with a cloned second drive in the other pocket. That version of the gig is ten seconds long. The prevention rules.
