WAVE-EIGHT, the field manual

The five things on the WAVE-EIGHT that change what happens next, if you are reading this in the booth. All five are explained in full further down this page.

Short answer. For a unit that will not charge or will not turn on, AlphaTheta ask you to check the power cable at both ends, the speaker and the outlet, and to consider that the built-in battery may simply be flat. For a unit that turns off by itself, the power management function is the usual answer: with no input signal and no operation for about 20 minutes the power goes off, and the rear POWER MANAGMENT switch, spelled that way on the unit, is what disables it. Two published temperature figures matter here and they are not the same: the recommended charging range is +10 C to +35 C while the allowable operating range is +5 C to +35 C, so a speaker cold enough to still run is not necessarily warm enough to charge, and AlphaTheta note that charging may take some time to start depending on conditions.

Why this matters. The WAVE-EIGHT is the speaker you take where the mains is not, so its power behaviour is the whole product. Twenty minutes with no signal is a soundcheck break or the gap between the load-in and the doors, and a speaker that has quietly switched itself off during it reads as a dead one.

Fix it now. Press the power button before anything else. Then the cable at both ends. If the unit is cold and refusing to charge, bring it indoors and give it time rather than swapping the cable, because that is a published limit rather than a fault.

Avoid it next time. Decide the POWER MANAGMENT switch position for how you actually work, charge indoors the night before rather than in a van, and arrive with the battery full even when there is mains in the room.

Short answer. AlphaTheta's list for no sound, low volume, cutting out or noise starts with the ordinary: both devices actually on, the volume set on the speaker and on the source, the source actually playing, the cable seated, and the terminals and plugs wiped clean before connecting. For either wireless path they then give the same two answers, and both are about the air rather than the gear. Anything nearby emitting in the 2.4 GHz band, a microwave oven, a wireless LAN, another transmitter, should be moved away or switched off. And distance and walls count: bring the transmitter or the phone closer, or move the speaker, if something solid is between them.

Why this matters. On a wireless speaker the instinct is to blame the WAVE-EIGHT, and AlphaTheta’s own answer for both of its wireless paths is that the problem is usually in the room rather than in the box. A venue is full of 2.4 GHz: the wifi, the card reader, the kitchen microwave. That is the same band SonicLink and Bluetooth both use.

Fix it now. Move the transmitter closer and put nothing solid between it and the speaker. If the audio is breaking up in one spot and not another, that is the band being crowded, and moving one thing is faster than changing any setting. If pairing itself failed, power both ends off and on and pair again.

Avoid it next time. Walk the wireless path at soundcheck rather than trusting the quoted range, and keep a cable in the bag. The XLR/TRS inputs do not care what else is transmitting.

Short answer. There is a reset, and it is a real one. Hold the Bluetooth and SonicLink buttons together for at least five seconds with the power on, then press the power button; the two indicators blink and the unit powers off when it is done. AlphaTheta are clear about the cost: all previous operations are reset and the paired device information is deleted with them.

Why this matters. AlphaTheta also note that static electricity and other outside factors can stop the WAVE-EIGHT working normally, and that turning it off and on may be all it takes. The reset is the step after that, and it is not free: everything paired to it is gone, so the phone or transmitter that was working yesterday has to be paired again before it works today.

Fix it now. Power cycle first, because it is the same thirty seconds without the cost. Reset only when the unit is genuinely not responding, and expect to re-pair before your first track.

Avoid it next time. Know the button combination before you need it, and if you reset at a gig, re-pair straight away rather than at the moment the music is supposed to start.

Short answer. No published firmware change history was found for the WAVE-EIGHT; a speaker of this kind has no library or PRO DJ LINK firmware role the way a CDJ or DJM does. This section was last checked against official sources on 30 August 2026.

Short answer. SonicLink is AlphaTheta's own low-latency wireless link, and the audio gets into it through a supplied SonicLink transmitter with an RCA input, its own battery good for approximately 8 hours, and a USB Type-C terminal for charging and daisy chaining. Bluetooth is the other wireless path: Bluetooth 5.1, SBC and AAC, approximately 10 m unobstructed, with pairing information stored for up to eight devices, and the manual is direct about the difference: "Bluetooth connections are not low-latency wireless connections. If you’re concerned about latency times, use a SonicLink connection instead."

How far each one reaches. The two wireless paths share the 2.4 GHz band and do not share a range. SonicLink is quoted at approximately 15 m unobstructed and Bluetooth at approximately 10 m unobstructed, and AlphaTheta footnote both as guidelines that change with the surrounding environment.

Combining units. a SonicLink daisy chain of up to 4 units, or a Bluetooth TWS connection of 2, with the channel selector deciding what each unit plays. The manual adds one cost to the chain: "Latency is greater when using SonicLink daisy chain connections than when using a standalone connection."

The cable rule for the chain. The daisy chain has one hard requirement: AlphaTheta state that the function does not work with cables other than the supplied cable, and ask you to be sure to use it. The transmitter for each speaker except the last stores inside the speaker body, connected to the storage USB terminal.

Why it matters. Combining is a real feature for building a bigger PA out of more than one unit, and both halves of it carry a condition: a chain that works on one specific cable and no other, and two radio paths sharing one crowded band.

Short answer. 2-way bass reflex active speaker, an 8-inch woofer and a 1-inch soft dome tweeter, with the Vortex Bass Accelerator configuration. Six sound modes on the sound mode switch, named as the manual prints them: MUSIC, MUSIC (low cut), FLAT, FLAT (low cut), SPEECH, SUBWOOFER. SPEECH emphasizes the vocal band for lectures and speech, and SUBWOOFER cuts high frequencies so the unit plays as a subwoofer, combined with another unit on MUSIC (low cut) or FLAT (low cut).

Inputs and outputs. XLR/TRS combo jack x2, 1/4-inch TRS jack x1, 3.5 mm stereo mini jack x1. Out: XLR x1, plus two USB Type-C power ports: DC OUT 1 at 5 V up to 2.1 A for charging a device, and DC OUT 2 at 5 V up to 500 mA for the transmitter chain. Neither USB port carries audio or firmware.

Why it matters. The sound modes are a real, documented control on the unit itself, not a claim about the room: SUBWOOFER mode on a full-range cabinet changes what the drivers are being asked to do, and it is designed to pair with another unit set to a low-cut mode.

The published figures. Approximately 8 hours of playback, with AlphaTheta’s own footnote that it is sometimes less depending on the conditions of use. Charging takes approximately 4 hours from empty with the power off and approximately 6 hours with it on. The unit runs on AC 110 V to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz as well as its built-in lithium-ion battery, draws 100 W in use and 0.3 W in power-off mode with the battery full, and its amplifier is rated at 110 W.

Reading it in the booth. Eight hours is measured somewhere that is not your event, at a volume that is not yours, in a sound mode you did not pick. A WAVE-EIGHT working hard outdoors is not the WAVE-EIGHT in the measurement. Treat the figure as the ceiling rather than the plan.

Charge it indoors, the day before. The recommended charging range starts at +10 C and the allowable operating range starts at +5 C, so a WAVE-EIGHT left in a cold van overnight may run in the morning and still refuse to take a charge. Charging is also slower with the power on, six hours against four.

Pack the supplied cable for the chain, and only that one. AlphaTheta state the daisy chain does not work with any other cable. A generic USB-C lead is the thing most likely to be in your bag and least likely to work here.

Walk the wireless path at soundcheck. SonicLink is quoted at about 15 m and Bluetooth at about 10 m, both unobstructed and both footnoted as guidelines. The wall you are going to stand behind is not in that measurement.

Know that it travels. The unit takes AC 110 V to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, so the speaker is not what stops you working in another country. The plug on the end of the cable might be.

Set POWER MANAGMENT deliberately. It switches the unit off after about 20 minutes idle, which is useful on battery and a nuisance during a long changeover. It is a rear switch, spelled that way on the unit, so decide once and know where it is.

Short answer. The manual gives a waterproof rating equivalent to IPX4 as specified in IEC 60529, valid only upright with the rear and side protective covers closed securely. Built-in casters, an extendable handle, grab handles, and a pole socket for stand mounting.

Why it matters. IPX4-equivalent covers splashes, not a poolside dunking or a set played in genuine rain, and the rating assumes the unit is upright with its covers shut. A speaker on its side with a cover open in the same drizzle is outside the rating. Treat it as what it actually says, not as "waterproof" in the everyday sense of the word.

Weight and size. 12.7 kg (28.0 lb), 300 x 554 x 337 mm (11.8 x 21.8 x 13.3 in).

Where it can work, and where it can charge. Two published temperature ranges, and they are not the same range. Charging is recommended between +10 C and +35 C (+50 F and +95 F). Operating is allowed between +5 C and +35 C (+41 F and +95 F).

Is it "WAVE EIGHT" or "WAVE-EIGHT"?

Is it fully waterproof?

No. The rating is equivalent to IPX4, splashing water only, and it holds only with the speaker upright and the protective covers closed. Not submersion, not sustained heavy rain.

Can I link WAVE-EIGHT units together?

Yes, two documented ways: a SonicLink daisy chain of up to 4 units, or a Bluetooth TWS connection of 2, with the channel selector deciding what each unit plays.

Does it read a USB drive for music?

No. It is a speaker, not a player; its USB-C ports supply power, one for charging a device and one for the transmitter chain, not DJ storage.
