A PRIME 4 DECK
IS DARK OR WILL NOT LOAD

For a Prime 4 or Prime 4+ deck whose lights are off and which will not load a track, Denon DJ point at the front panel, not the software: the source switch for that deck. It must be set to Engine, the left position. In their words, "If switched to Line (right) the display will read 'Line In' and all deck control and lights will be disabled."

Why it looks like a dead deck. On Line, that deck is passing an external input straight to the mixer section, so its screen, its controls and its lights have nothing to do and go dark by design. Nothing is broken. Flip the switch to Engine and the deck comes back at once, no reboot needed.

The Prime 4 and Prime 4+ carry one source switch per channel on the front panel, so the fault can hit one deck while the other plays normally, which is what makes it look like hardware. Check every switch, not just the one under the dark deck, and check them again after anyone else has used the unit: a guest DJ who ran a CDJ or a turntable through a channel leaves it on Line.

If the lights are on and the deck responds but the TRACK will not load, the switch is not the fault. Go to the next section.

For the drives themselves, the Prime 4 FAQ states the rule once for every kind of storage: "All storage media connected to the PRIME 4 should be formatted to either FAT32 or exFAT with an MBR (Master Boot Record) style partition structure." The internal bay takes "a 2.5" SATA hard drive; either HDD or SSD", under the same rule.

File system and partition map in one sentence, and the partition map is the one people miss. A drive formatted exFAT on a Mac with the default GPT partition map is the correct file system on the wrong map, and the unit may see nothing on it. Same story as the Denon drive page, which has the full order for a drive that will not read.

Look at the front panel before you touch anything else. Source switch to Engine. That is the whole repair for a dark deck, it takes one second, and it is the one DJs never think of.

If the deck is alive and the drive is the problem, play from the other input. A second drive in the other slot, or the internal drive if you fitted one, plays while you sort out the first. Reformatting is not a booth job.
