exFAT vs FAT32:
WHICH ONE FOR CDJs?

• FAT32 + MBR, works on CDJ-850, 900, 2000, 2000NXS/NXS2, 3000, every XDJ. The universal key.
• exFAT, supported on CDJ-3000, CDJ-3000X, CDJ-1500X, XDJ-RX3, XDJ-XZ, XDJ-AZ, XDJ-AN, OPUS-QUAD and OMNIS-DUO (firmware matters, see the player table); refused by every CDJ-2000, including the NXS2, still common in clubs worldwide. One trap almost nobody mentions: rekordbox writes exFAT to USB drives only. It will not export to an exFAT SD card at all, whatever the player supports.
• NTFS / APFS, never. AlphaTheta's own rekordbox manual lists NTFS as unsupported on both SD cards and USB drives, so rekordbox will not export to it in the first place.
• Partition scheme, choose MBR. AlphaTheta documents this for specific models: their support articles state that the CDJ-3000 (article 4406135001625) and the XDJ-AN (article 53214453591009) do not support the GUID Partition Map. For the rest of the range the manual is silent on schemes, so MBR is the manufacturer's documented answer where they name one and our recommendation everywhere else. A drive left on GPT, which is what you get if you erase the volume instead of the device on a Mac, is a recurring cause of "it formatted fine but the player refuses it". MBR costs you nothing.

Per file, not per drive, and it is the one limit that matters. No DJ track approaches 4GB; even a 30-minute WAV is under 1GB. The only DJs who need exFAT are the ones carrying multi-hour uncompressed recordings on their gig drive, which is its own mistake. FAT32 has other ceilings, a 2TB volume limit and the per-model file and folder counts AlphaTheta publishes in support article 4406512510105, but on a 32 to 64GB music drive none of them come up.

• Most drives above 32GB ship exFAT from the factory, so a brand-new "professional" 64GB stick fails on a CDJ-2000 out of the box.

Format for the oldest player you might ever face, not the most modern one you own. The festival main stage has CDJ-3000s; the afterparty basement has a CDJ-2000 with a cigarette burn. FAT32 plays both.
