FORMAT A USB FOR CDJ:
THE SETTINGS THAT ALWAYS WORK
The answer: FAT32 file system · MBR (Master Boot Record) partition scheme · 32–64 GB quality drive. That combination is read by every CDJ and XDJ ever shipped.
⚠️ Formatting erases the drive. Copy everything off it first.
On Mac (Disk Utility)
- Open Disk Utility → View → Show All Devices (this matters).
- Select the drive itself (top level), not the volume under it.
- Erase → Format: MS-DOS (FAT) → Scheme: Master Boot Record.
- If "Scheme" doesn't appear, you selected the volume — go back to Show All Devices.
On Windows
- Right-click the drive in Explorer → Format → File system: FAT32 → Quick format is fine.
- FAT32 option missing (drives over 32 GB)? Use Disk Management to shrink to a 32 GB partition, or a free FAT32 formatter tool.
- Windows drives are MBR by default — you rarely need to touch the scheme. To check: Disk Management → right-click the disk → Properties → Volumes.
The traps
- exFAT: works on newer players (CDJ-3000, recent firmware), fails on the older CDJ-2000s still living in half the world's booths. FAT32 works everywhere.
- GPT scheme: the silent killer on Mac-formatted drives. Always choose MBR.
- 128 GB+ drives: more trouble than they're worth for players. 32–64 GB is the sweet spot. Drives that behave →
After formatting: put music on with Rekordbox Export mode — don't just drag files if you want cues, grids and playlists at the booth.
