TWO DRIVES,
ZERO PANIC

Every recovery technique, ours included, is a gamble played under pressure. A mirrored second drive is not a gamble: it's a fifteen-second swap while the room keeps dancing. The pros you never hear panic stories about aren't lucky. They carry the boring second drive.

• Buy two identical drives, same brand, same model, same size. Identical drives behave identically on players. The models we trust →
• Format both: FAT32 + MBR. Step-by-step →
• Export to both, back to back, in rekordbox EXPORT mode. Same playlists, same order. Eject each with the rekordbox button.
• Label them. A and B, tape or marker. In a dark booth you want zero thinking.

• Library changed this week? Re-export to both drives. An outdated backup is a trap.
• Drive A in the gig bag. Drive B on your keychain or jacket. Never the same pocket, never the same bag.
• At the booth: play from A. If A misbehaves mid-set, eject, insert B, keep mixing. That's the whole emergency plan.
• Once a month: back up the rekordbox library itself (File → Library → Backup Library) to a third place, cloud or home drive.

Two drives are not two independent chances. You export to both from the same laptop, back to back, from the same library, so the causes that arrive through the export arrive on both: a bad export, a withdrawn rekordbox version, two sticks from the same production batch. Claiming the odds multiply into nothing would be wrong.

What the second drive does remove is the failure that actually ends gigs: one physical drive dying, or being dropped, lost or corrupted, in one booth, with the room waiting. That failure is common, it is the one you cannot fix on site, and the answer to it is a fifteen-second swap. No single drive, however good, can give you that. A second one can.
