Short version: a failed or corrupt export is a database problem, not a music problem. Your tracks are almost always fine, the index the CDJ reads is broken. A clean re-export fixes most cases.
The two flavours
- Export won't complete: hangs, errors mid-sync, or rekordbox stops seeing the device. Usually a failing drive, a full drive, or a locked file. If the drive never appears in rekordbox at all, that is a different problem, see rekordbox not detecting the USB.
- Export "worked" but the player shows nothing / errors: the database landed corrupt, classic after an unsafe eject. Often shows as E-8302 at the booth.
The recovery, in order
- Close rekordbox, unplug and replug the USB, reopen rekordbox in EXPORT mode.
- Check free space, an export onto a nearly-full drive corrupts silently.
- If the device shows in rekordbox: delete this gig's playlists from the device, re-sync them fresh, and eject with the eject button.
- If the device errors or won't sync: copy any music you need off the drive, format it FAT32 + MBR, and export again to the clean drive.
- Export small. This gig's playlists only. A 2,000-track full-library export is where corruption lives.
- Verify: eject, replug, reopen, the device should load with playlists intact before you leave the house.
Make exports bulletproof
- Always eject from rekordbox, then wait for the OS to release the drive.
- Keep the library healthy: File → Library → Backup Library, monthly.
- Back up the rekordbox library to another drive or cloud.
- Two identical USBs, exported together. The second one is why this article never matters again.
