CANNOT SEE YOUR CONTROLLER

Every step below is published by AlphaTheta for their own controllers, and every one of them is reversible.

• Use the cable that came with it. A charge-only cable carries power and no data, so the unit lights up and the computer never sees it. This is the single most common cause and it looks exactly like a dead controller.
• Take the hub out. Connect the controller straight into the computer. Docks, dongles and monitor hubs are the second cause.
• Unplug the other USB devices. Drives, interfaces, phone cables, everything except the controller.
• Try a different port. On a laptop, try the other side.
• Close the background applications, then open the DJ software last, with the controller already connected and powered on.

If it appears after any one of those, the controller is fine and you have found the fault. Stop there.

This is the split that catches people who have just changed computers. On Windows a DJ controller generally needs the maker's own audio driver installed before any DJ application will see it as an audio device. On macOS most controllers are class compliant and need no driver at all.

So a controller that worked for years on a Mac and shows nothing on a new Windows laptop is not broken, and a driver is not a sign that something is wrong. AlphaTheta state the Mac half explicitly for the DDJ-SX: install the ASIO driver on Windows, and Mac users do not need one.

Check the driver your model actually needs on its own page in this catalogue. The version that matters is the one the maker publishes for your operating system, not whichever number is highest on the list.

These are AlphaTheta's own words for these models, not a general method applied to them. If your controller is one of these, this is the authority.

DDJ-SX. AlphaTheta publish eight checks in their own order for a unit Serato DJ cannot see. Install the ASIO driver on Windows, and note Mac users do not need one. Verify the computer sees the controller with the DDJ Version Display Utility on Windows or System Profiler on a Mac. Use the included USB cable. Avoid USB hubs and use a port that supplies power. Close other programs, screen savers and resident software. Disconnect external drives and keyboards. Try another USB port. Then the sound settings: Control Panel on Windows, or on a Mac remove and re detect the device in Audio MIDI Setup.

DDJ-SX3. When the unit is not recognised after installing the driver, AlphaTheta document a full reinstall rather than a retry. On Windows, open Device Manager, look under "Sound, video and game controllers", "Right-click the item where ‘?’ or ‘!’ is displayed, and then click [Uninstall]", uninstall the correctly shown DDJ-SX3 entries the same way, disconnect the USB cable and leave it disconnected, uninstall the driver software, restart, reinstall, then reconnect. On macOS they say the driver "may not have been installed properly": disconnect USB, uninstall the driver, restart, reinstall.

DDJ-SR2. When Serato DJ does not see the unit, AlphaTheta document a procedure per platform. On Windows: connect the unit and power it on, go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, set a different audio device as the default, restart the computer, then launch Serato DJ. On macOS: open Applications, Utilities, Audio MIDI Setup, go to MIDI Studio, disconnect the controller, remove its icon, reconnect it and restart Serato DJ. The stale MIDI Studio entry is a classic pre gig failure.

DDJ-SZ2. When Serato DJ does not recognise the unit, AlphaTheta document a reset per platform. On Windows, go to Control Panel and Sound, pick any audio device other than the DDJ-SZ2, set it as the default device, close the panel and restart. On macOS, open Applications, Audio MIDI Setup, the MIDI window, and remove the Pioneer device; the article notes the icon disappears and comes back again. Then power cycle the unit and launch the DJ application.

DDJ-1000SRT. When Serato DJ Pro does not react to the controller at all, AlphaTheta say the software or the operating system may not have recognised it as a controller. Their list is to remove any USB hub and connect direct, unplug other USB peripherals, close background applications and try a different USB port.

Then its maker has published no procedure for this that we have found, and this site will not invent one for it. There are 31 controllers in this catalogue and five of them have a documented answer.

That is not a criticism of anybody. It is the state of the documentation, and knowing it is useful: it means the physical checks at the top of this page are the whole of what is published for most controllers, and that anything beyond them you read elsewhere is somebody's guess rather than the maker's instruction.

What is worth doing next, in order: confirm the controller powers on and its lights behave normally, try a second computer if one is anywhere near you, and check your model's page here for the driver and firmware your maker publishes.

A controller makes no sound without a computer, so there is no recovery inside the controller. The recovery is the booth.

Almost every club booth has a player and a mixer that work without a laptop. If you have a USB drive with your music on it, you can play from the house gear while you sort the controller out afterwards. That is what the rest of this site is for, and it is why the drive in your bag matters more than the controller does.
